LHC UMC Key 3s –

I am following up on our last communication regarding changing chartered organizations away from the United Methodist Church. As a reminder, the UMC church is still supporting Scouting, but forging a path for a new type of relationship with the organization. By the end of 2022, the UMC will no longer be a chartered organization and we the Longhorn Council is here to assist.

This week on Tuesday evening the Longhorn Council Executive Board approved that the Longhorn Council can be a chartering organization for a unit, which allows your unit to choose from 3 different options in continuing its scouting Journey. You may have seen a similar chart to this in the past. We are going to share in order which way we recommend looking into for the continued journey.

  1. Finding a new Traditional Chartered organization and continuing to meet at the UMC church with an approved Facilities use agreement. Traditional charters that may work in this option are Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, etc… This option keeps Scouting as close to what you know as possible.
  2. Utilizing the Affiliate Organization agreement and the Longhorn Council becomes the chartered organization for your unit. This option allows your unit to continue to meet at the UMC church, but there would be some changes in reporting your unit finances and assets to the council.
  3. Finding a new traditional chartered organization. This option would allow your chartered relationship to continue as normal, but this would mean moving meeting spaces and no longer meeting at the UMC church.
  4. Group of Citizens Units – Now that the LHC can become the chartered organization for you, we DO NOT recommend this option, where there is some liability that would fall on the parents of the unit.

Please see the link below to help you decide which option works best for you. Please reply back to this email to let me know which option your Scouting Unit is looking to utilize. We would like to begin the paperwork now to provide a seamless transition through recharter.
